Commitment

At BairStories, we support the Ethical Storytelling Pledge's belief that storytellers shape how the world sees people's lives. 

Therefore, we commit to the following practices and Biblical principles that lay our foundation for the pledge's core values of integrity, respect, and humility. 

 

Biblical Principals 

Speak up for those who have no voice, for the justice of all who are dispossessed. Speak up, judge righteously, and defend the cause of the oppressed and needy.
Proverbs 31:8-9

Mankind, he has told each of you what is good and what the LORD requires of you: to act justly, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God. 
Micah 6:8

Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 7:12 

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility, consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.

Ethical Storytelling Pledge*

  1. Tell stories the way we want ours told, always putting people first.

  2. Clearly explain the story's purpose and use, addressing questions before filming or recording.

  3. Ensure suitable translation when needed and respect constituents’ wishes for anonymity.

  4. Obtain full consent and participation for all images and messages.

  5. Uphold dignity through empowering, truthful, and hopeful storytelling.

  6. Avoid sensationalism, stereotypes, or misrepresentation.

  7. Seek feedback from constituents and incorporate it into the final story.

  8. Follow laws and protocols for vulnerable persons, including children’s rights.

  9. Listen humbly, learn from failures, and seek advice when unsure.

  10. Refuse to tell stories that compromise the integrity of this pledge.

  11. Take full responsibility for ethical storytelling and messaging.
